Sports Competitions 2016/2017
Key Stage 2 Outdoor Athletics
The final Athletics competition of the year saw St Mary's compete at King James School in the Knaresborough Outdoor Athletics.
With two strong teams in attendance from St Mary's, the competition for the winners position was fierce.
The competition consisted of three track and three field events with two different relays to finish.
The teams excelled in all the disciplines and managed several race and field victories.
After all the points were calculated the results were
- Year 3 A team - 1st Place, Year 3 B team - 2nd Place
- Year 4 A team - 1st Place, Year 4 B team - 2nd Place
- Year 5 A team - 3rd Place, Year 5 B team - 4th Place
- Year 6 B team - 2nd Place, Year 6 A team - 3rd Place
Well done to all the athletes involved in the competition.
Year 3 Skipping
The first competition in May saw all the Year 3 children compete in a Skipping festival at St John Fisher.
The competition was ran by Skipping Schools and allowed all the children to compete in different individual, paired and group skipping skills.
After several weeks of practice in P.E. lessons the children performed excellently holding their own against predominantly Year 4 teams.
When all the points were counted up St Mary's finished in 5th Place.
Congratulations to Owen, Amalie, Robert, Louie, Daisy and Charlie who managed to gain a bronze award in their individual competitions.
Year 4 Tri-Golf
An excited team of 10 Year 4 children took part in the Harrogate School Sports Partnership Tri-Golf competition at Harrogate Golf Club.
The team consisting of 5 boys and 5 Girls worked their way around 8 different skills stations aiming to score as many points as they could through putting and chipping accurately and for distance.
All the children performed excellently and played in a very competitive manner but showed brilliant School Games Values throughout the competition.
After all the scores had been collated St Mary's managed to finish in an impressive 6th place out of 14 teams.
Well done to all the children who competed in the competition.
Year 6 Tag Rugby Final
After a long wait for the competition to be arranged the Year 6 Tag Rugby team finally got a chance to play in the Harrogate Partnership final.
The team started a little slowly coming up short in both their opening fixtures. However they soon began to find their form that had crowned them Knaresborough champions and ran in some impressive victories. In total the team played in 8 matches winning 3, losing 3 and drawing 2.
Overall St Mary's finished 5th in the standings and can be very proud of their efforts after not been involved in Tag Rugby for several months before the final was arranged.
Year 4 & 6 Tennis
The Year 6 teams opened up this years tennis fixtures, taking part in the Knaresborough Schools competition at King James School. The three teams of four players competed in four different matches gaining as many points as they could to gain victory for their team.
There was some wonderful, fast paced tennis on show with some brilliant rallies between the players.
Congratulations go to the St Mary's A team of David, Henry, Ruby and Victoria who finished in first place and qualify for the Harrogate Finals.
Several days later the Year 4 teams aimed to replicate their older peers in their own Knaresborough Schools competition.
The children started a little cautiously but soon began to grow in confidence and played better and better as the competition went on.
Congratulations to St Mary's A team of Keziah, Sam, Emma and Lilly P who finished runners up and also qualify for the Harrogate Finals.
Well done to all the Year 6 and Year 4 teams who competed, all of whom showed brilliant School Games Values throughout.
Year 2, 4 & 6 Quad Kids Athletics
The final week of the half term saw the Year 2, 4 & 6 Quad Kids athletics teams compete at the Harrogate Partnership competition at St Aidan's School.
All the children in each team had to compete in a distance run, a sprint, a javelin throw and a long jump.
Each team showed great encouragement to each other and the athletes pushed themselves to gain as many points as they could.
After the results were counted up;
- Year 2 Team finished in 3rd Place
- Year 4 Team finished in 2nd Place
- Year 6 Team finished in 2nd Place
Congratulations to all our athletes who took part and for all three teams to finish in the top three positions was an excellent achievement.
Year 5 & 6 Sportshall Athletics North Yorkshire Final
Medal heartache for the Year 5 & 6 Sportshall Athletics team as they finished in an agonising 4th place in the North Yorkshire School Games Finals.
After claiming the Knaresborough title and the Harrogate Area title the team went to Catterick to compete against 8 other champion schools from across the county.
There were some amazing performances on the track and in the field with every child giving every last bit of effort and energy to gain as many points as they could for our team.
As the results were read out the children were initially disappointed with their 4th place finish. However they were soon reminded about what an amazing achievement it was to have not only qualified for the competition by being Harrogate champions but finishing that high up in the standings against other large champion schools was superb. Every child can be hugely proud of their efforts and achievements throughout all the Sportshall Athletics competitions.
Year 3 & 4 Sportshall Athletics
St Mary's completed a hattrick of Year 3 & 4 Sportshall Athletics titles as this years team made it three wins in three years against their local rivals.
With some exceptional speed on the track and some high class field eventing St Mary's ran out winners by a comfortable 50 points.
Well done to all the children who competed, it was a fantastic team effort from everyone involved!
Year 6 Tag Rugby
For the second time in two days St Mary's became Knaresborough champions this time taking the Year 5 & 6 Tag Rugby title.
Two teams of Year 6 boys and girls competed against five other Knaresborough schools. Team B got off to a great start in their pool winning comfortably against St Johns. They then unfortunately fell to a defeat by eventual runners up Goldsborough A before scoring a last minute equalising try to draw against Sicklinghall.
Team A took on both Aspin and Goldsborough B in their pool winning both matches comfortably.
Team B then played off against Aspin for 3rd place but after an excited game were on the wrong end of a 5 - 3 scoreline.
Team A followed up their two pool victories with a win against Goldsborough A in the final. A pulsating game saw a late try win it for St Mary's 3 - 2 and qualify for the Harrogate finals in March.
Well done to both teams for some excellent rugby with some amazing tries scored. Also congratulations to Jacob A, Ruby and Thomas who were all nominated for Schools Games Values Wristbands.
Year 6 Quick Sticks Hockey
After the Half Term break the Year 6's were straight back into the sporting action competing in the Harrogate Partnership Quick Sticks Hockey tournament.
Three teams took part in some fast paced, high scoring matches with some excellent determination on show from all teams. Team A managed to gain two victories after two opening defeats which left them in 4th place in their pool of teams. Team B managed to finish one place higher, ending with the same record as Team A but finishing in 3rd place in their pool. Team C were unfortunate to only gain one draw from their four games but showed excellent team spirit as they were the only team where each child played every minute of every game.
Congratulation to all the children who competed and a big well done to David who was chosen for the respect School Games Value award.
Some of our Year 5 & 6 children took part in a Swimming Gala at Ashville School Sports Centre. Everybody tried really hard and swam very well and our team came 2nd in the heat and 5th overall. Well done to you all!
Year 5 & 6 Girls Football
After being beaten on sudden death penalties in last years final, the Year 5 & 6 Girls football team were keen to go one better in this years competition and claim the Harrogate Partnership title.
The girls opened their account with a solid 2 - 0 victory over Pannal thanks to two goals from Ruby.
The second game was an even more comfortable 2 - 0 victory with goals from Gracie and Ruby.
After a match rest the girls came back even stronger beating Saltergate 3 - 0.
The final game of the competition was a much tougher affair coming up against an also unbeaten Rossett Acre. A slight defensive lapse and some agonisingly close shooting meant that the girls were defeated 1 - 0.
This result meant the girls finished 2nd in their pool but managed to gain qualification to the final.
Year 5 & 6 Sportshall Athletics
Our Year 5 & 6 Sportshall Athletics team stormed to victory in this years' Harrogate Partnership Final.
Having finished in 2nd place in last years final, Mr Wilson and his team were determined to claim back the title they previously won in 2014.
The children performed brilliantly on the track winning several races in their heat and backed this up with some fantastic throwing and jumping in the field events.
Winning the title means the team will now go on to compete at the North Yorkshire Final representing the Harrogate Area against other champions from round North Yorkshire.
A massive well done to all our athletes.
Year 5 & 6 Girls Football
For the second time in two weeks St Mary's Year 5 & 6 claimed victory in a Harrogate Partnership final.
This time it was the turn of the Year 5 & 6 girls footballers who produced a magnificent display to take the crown after being losing finalists last year.
The girls came up against five other qualifying teams from across the Harrogate Partnership but with some brilliant teamwork, some excellent defending and the attacking skills of Ruby and Gracie, the girls won all 5 games without conceding a goal.
The girls will now go on to represent the Harrogate Partnership at the North Yorkshire School Games in the summer.
Well done to the girls for an amazing performance.
Year 5 & 6 Boys Football
On Tuesday 4th October two teams from Year 5 & 6 competed in the Knaresborough round of the Boys Football Tournament.
Both teams played in three twenty minute matches, against teams from Aspin and Goldsborough as well as against each other.
Team A were beaten narrowly in the opening fixture by Goldsborough and then beaten again by Aspin.
Team B suffered the same fate being beaten by Aspin and then Goldsborough.
The final game saw both St Mary's teams compete against each other. After an excellent end to end game Team A came out comfortable winners to finish 3rd overall in the competition.
Year 4 & 6 Swimming
The Swim team began their season with an excellent 4th place finish the qualifying round of the Harrogate Borough Council Swimming competition.
Competing against schools across the area, St. Mary's started strongly and were in 2nd place after the first round of backstroke races.
They managed to hold position after the second round of breaststroke races before dropping slightly to 4th after the freestyle and relay races.
With a top 5 finish secured the team will now compete at the Hydro in the Harrogate Grand Final.
Key Stage 2 Cross Country
On a bright October Saturday morning several children from Years 3 to 6 took part in the Harrogate Schools Sports Partnership KS2 Cross-Country.
With races for boys and girls in all four year groups there was good competition for a top 8 position which would see the children qualify for the North Yorkshire Final.
Congratulations to Louie - Year 3, Katherine and Kate - both Year 5 who all ran brilliantly to secure a place in the final.
Well done to all the runners who competed you can be hugely proud of your effort and commitment.
Key Stage 1 Cross Country
Monday saw the turn of Key Stage 1 children to competed in the Harrogate Partnership Cross Country.
18 boys and girls from Year 1 & 2 competed in separate year group and boys and girls races on a tough 600 metre course.
Well done to Jack in the Year 1 boys race who finished an excellent 3rd place.
The final race of the evening saw Lily in the Year 2 girls race claim an amazing 1st place with a fantastic run.
Congratulations to all the children who took part they all ran their very best in some great races.
Year 5 & 6 Sportshall Athletics
The last day of the Half Term saw Athletes from Year 5 and 6 compete against each other and St John's in the Knaresborough Round of the Sportshall Athletics competition.
The children competed in a variety of track and field events scoring as many points for their team as possible.
After all the events had taken place and the scores were counted up St Mary's Year 6 team came out on top closely followed by our Year 5 team in 2nd place.
Well done to all the athletes who took part and they now move on to try and win the Harrogate Area final.
Year 3 & 4 Archery
Mr Wilson took 3 teams to Aspin School to compete in a mini Archery competition. The children took part in 4 stations which involved shooting arrows for accuracy & distance, trying to gain as many points for their team as possible. Congratulations to Team B – Nathan, Fabian, Reuben, Lilly P, Isabella and Maisie who came 3rd place out of 8 teams.
Year 5 & 6 Cycling
Two boys teams and two girls teams competed in a cycling competition around a course on Aspin School Field. The Boys A team of Alex, Oliver M, Thomas and Lorcan came in 1st place in their event and the Girls A team of Ruby, Gracie, Connie and Scarlett also finished in 1st place. Congratulations to Alex McGoohan and Kate Whiley who won the individual Boys and Girls races.
